Finland has taken a significant step forward in modernizing its public safety communications infrastructure, as the first ambulances equipped with the next-generation Virve 2 services are now operational in the South Karelia region.

The newly connected ambulances, deployed in Imatra and Luumäki, mark an important milestone in the country’s transition from legacy narrowband systems to advanced broadband-enabled mission-critical communications. The rollout has been implemented in collaboration with the wellbeing services county of South Karelia, enabling emergency medical services (EMS) teams to benefit from enhanced connectivity and real-time data capabilities.

The Virve 2 network is designed to support secure, resilient, and high-performance communications for authorities across Finland. By integrating broadband technologies, the system allows paramedics and first responders to access critical information instantly, improving situational awareness, coordination, and patient outcomes during emergency operations.

According to field insights published by Pelastustieto, the introduction of Virve 2-equipped ambulances is already demonstrating practical benefits in real-world scenarios. These include improved communication between emergency personnel and hospitals, faster decision-making, and more efficient use of resources in time-critical situations.

The deployment also reflects Finland’s broader strategy to future-proof its public safety ecosystem. The Virve 2 services are now available nationwide, providing a scalable platform that will continue to evolve based on operational feedback from frontline users.

Authorities emphasize that ongoing development will ensure that security and emergency response teams are equipped with the most advanced tools available, reinforcing Finland’s position as a global leader in mission-critical communications innovation.

As more agencies adopt Virve 2, the country is expected to further enhance interoperability, reliability, and efficiency across its emergency response network—ultimately strengthening public safety and community resilience.
