Kontron Transportation, a leading provider of mission-critical communication solutions for the railway industry, today announced that it has been awarded a contract by Infraestruturas de Portugal (IP), the state-owned company responsible for managing Portugal’s rail and road infrastructure, to modernize the existing railway communications core network for the Portuguese railway system.
The contract marks another significant milestone in Kontron Transportation’s European expansion strategy and further strengthens the company’s footprint in Portugal. Under the agreement, Kontron Transportation will become the new supplier of radio communication infrastructure, delivering a future-ready communications platform designed to support the continued evolution of Portugal’s railway network toward the Future Railway Mobile Communication System (FRMCS) standard.
As railway operators across Europe prepare for the migration from legacy GSM-R networks to FRMCS, the modernization of communications infrastructure has become a strategic priority to enable next-generation digital rail operations. FRMCS, developed by the international railway community and based on 3GPP mobile technologies, is designed to support advanced railway applications, including enhanced operational communications, automated train operations, real-time monitoring, and improved safety and efficiency.
The project scope includes the supply, installation, configuration, testing, commissioning, and migration of Kontron Transportation’s communications solution. The company will also provide comprehensive training, documentation, maintenance, and operational support to ensure a seamless transition while maintaining interoperability with existing railway infrastructure and applications.
By integrating the new communications platform with the current operational environment, the project is expected to provide Portuguese Railways with a resilient and scalable foundation capable of supporting future digitalization initiatives and evolving mission-critical communication requirements.
“We are proud to support the modernization of the Portuguese railway communication infrastructure,” said Richard Neussl, Managing Director of Kontron Transportation. “This project underlines our commitment to delivering reliable and future-ready communication systems for mission-critical railway operations.”
The award further demonstrates Kontron Transportation’s expertise in delivering complex railway communication projects and reinforces its role in supporting the digital transformation of Europe’s railway sector through secure, resilient, and standards-based mission-critical communications technologies.
