Kontron Transportation has been awarded a major railway modernization contract on the Canfranc–Huesca line in northern Spain, further strengthening its position as a key technology partner in the country’s rail infrastructure transformation.

The project covers the Canfranc–Ayerbe section and includes the deployment of advanced communications, safety and operational control systems designed to enhance railway efficiency, reliability and passenger safety along the corridor.

Under the contract, Kontron Transportation will implement Traffic Control Devices, Fixed and Mobile Communications, Detection, Energy, Protection and Safety systems, with a total capital investment of approximately €31 million.

A central component of the project is the rollout of GSM-R mobile communication infrastructure, valued at €8 million. The scope includes civil works, power systems, shelters and full implementation services in line with ADIF’s requirements for conventional railway lines.

The deployment will span 71 sites using a simple layer architecture aimed at delivering optimized operational performance, improved reliability and efficient system integration across the route.

The full modernization program is scheduled for completion over a 30-month period and is expected to significantly enhance communication capabilities, operational management and railway safety on one of northern Spain’s key transport corridors.

The latest contract marks another milestone in Kontron Transportation’s ongoing mission to deliver future-ready railway communication and critical infrastructure solutions across Europe.
