NSW Government Upgrades SES with Next-Generation Mission-Critical Connectivity

The New South Wales Government has unveiled a $7.7 million investment to strengthen the communications infrastructure of the NSW State Emergency Service (NSW SES), delivering next-generation connectivity technologies that will enable emergency responders to remain operational even when conventional telecommunications networks are disrupted.


The funding forms part of the state's ongoing strategy to improve disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities ahead of the Australian summer severe weather season, when floods, storms, bushfires and other natural hazards typically place significant pressure on emergency services.


Building More Resilient Emergency Communications

Reliable communications are fundamental to effective emergency management. During major incidents, damaged telecommunications infrastructure can significantly hinder coordination between incident controllers, field responders and emergency operations centres.


The latest investment will introduce a comprehensive suite of communications upgrades throughout the NSW SES network, including:

  • Portable broadband internet connectivity kits for rapid field deployment

  • Internet-enabled Forward Command Vehicles

  • High-capacity mobile connectivity trailers

  • Enhanced connectivity across the NSW SES operational vehicle fleet

  • Improved communications infrastructure at SES units statewide

  • These enhancements are designed to provide resilient connectivity for emergency personnel operating in remote, disaster-affected or communications-compromised environments.


Real-Time Situational Awareness Through Connected Technologies

One of the most significant enhancements will allow NSW SES drone operators to securely stream live aerial video directly to Incident Management Teams and the State Control Centre.


The portable connectivity kits will maintain broadband communications even in locations where terrestrial communications infrastructure has been damaged or is unavailable, allowing decision-makers to receive real-time intelligence from the incident ground.


Improved access to live operational data is expected to strengthen incident coordination, accelerate resource deployment and support faster operational decision-making during complex emergencies.


Satellite Tracking Expands Maritime Rescue Capabilities

The investment also introduces satellite tracking technology across the NSW SES vessel fleet for the first time.


The new capability will enable real-time monitoring of rescue boats during flood response and other water-based operations, providing incident controllers with improved operational oversight while enhancing responder safety during high-risk missions.


Live vessel tracking is expected to improve deployment efficiency, situational awareness and command visibility throughout large-scale rescue operations.


Supporting Frontline Volunteers

The NSW Government said the communications upgrades are intended to equip thousands of NSW SES volunteers with modern, reliable technologies that improve collaboration, maintain operational connectivity and enable faster emergency response.


The investment reflects the growing importance of resilient broadband, satellite communications, mobile command systems and real-time data sharing within contemporary public safety operations.


As climate-related emergencies become more frequent and complex, emergency agencies are increasingly adopting resilient communications technologies that combine terrestrial broadband, satellite connectivity, mobile command platforms and live video capabilities to ensure uninterrupted mission-critical communications during disasters.


The NSW Government said continued investment in personnel, equipment and digital infrastructure remains central to building stronger emergency response capabilities and more resilient communities across New South Wales.
