Qualcomm is accelerating the development of 5G sidelink technology with a strategic focus on public safety, aiming to deliver reliable direct device-to-device communications for mission-critical operations.

Speaking at IWCE 2026, Qualcomm executives revealed that the company is prioritizing emergency services use cases in collaboration with global industry stakeholders.

Public Safety Driving 5G Innovation

Unlike traditional mobile technology rollouts, Qualcomm confirmed that the evolution of 5G sidelink is being guided by frontline responder requirements.

The technology, standardized under 3GPP, enables devices to communicate directly without relying on cellular networks—critical in scenarios where infrastructure is unavailable or compromised.

“Firefighters, law enforcement, and emergency responders have unique operational needs,” said Brittany Haile of Qualcomm. “Their input is directly shaping how sidelink will be implemented and deployed.”

Enabling Reliable Off-Network Communications

5G sidelink is expected to play a key role in enhancing:

  • Disaster response communications

  • Remote and rural operations

  • Indoor emergency connectivity

  • Network-resilient mission-critical services

Industry leaders at the event expressed strong support, noting that the technology could overcome long-standing limitations of traditional systems, including gaps in indoor coverage and delayed infrastructure deployment.

Ecosystem Commitment Critical to Success

Qualcomm stressed that successful deployment will require collaboration across the communications ecosystem, including:

  • Mobile network operators

  • Device manufacturers

  • Public safety agencies

  • Infrastructure providers

The company also confirmed it will not commercialize sidelink solutions until performance standards meet the stringent requirements defined by public safety stakeholders.

Closing the In-Building Communications Gap

With current deployment rates of in-building wireless systems unable to keep pace with demand, 5G sidelink presents a faster, more flexible alternative.

The technology is positioned to complement existing LMR and cellular systems, offering first responders a reliable communication layer in environments where traditional networks fall short.
