SouthernLinc today announced the successful deployment of a Cell on Wheels (COW) near Fargo, Georgia, to support emergency communications for firefighting teams responding to a large wildfire in the region.

The deployment was initiated to provide reliable and resilient communications coverage in a remote area where network infrastructure is limited, ensuring that first responders can maintain continuous connectivity during critical operations.

To enhance interoperability among agencies, SouthernLinc established an LMR-to-LTE network patch, enabling seamless communication between traditional Land Mobile Radio (LMR) systems and broadband LTE networks. The solution supports coordinated response efforts for teams including the Georgia Forestry Commission, helping maintain clear and uninterrupted communication on the front lines.

The COW deployment was further supported by a satellite backhaul connection using Starlink, allowing rapid network extension without reliance on terrestrial infrastructure. This approach ensured that coverage could be established quickly and maintained reliably despite challenging environmental conditions.

“This deployment reflects our commitment to delivering resilient, mission-critical communications when and where they are needed most,” said a SouthernLinc spokesperson. “By combining LMR interoperability, LTE coverage and satellite connectivity, we are helping ensure that emergency teams can operate safely and effectively during wildfire response efforts.”

The initiative was made possible through close collaboration across SouthernLinc’s Engineering, Operations, Radio Access Network (RAN), and Core teams. On-site efforts were led by Joe Sires, with support from team members Scott Dyer, Scott Pearson, John Long, and William Nash. Additional support from the Core network team enabled the successful integration of the satellite connection with the mobile network platform.

Wildfires continue to present significant operational challenges for emergency services, particularly in remote or infrastructure-constrained environments. Deployable communication assets such as Cell-on-Wheels units, combined with hybrid LMR, LTE, and satellite technologies, are playing an increasingly critical role in supporting public safety and disaster response operations.
