Boldyn Networks has reached a significant breakthrough in offshore wind technology following the successful demonstration of advanced robotic inspection over its Private 5G network at the 5G Innovation Lab at the Port of Blyth. In collaboration with Acuity Robotics Ltd and the 5G Innovation Centre, Acuity’s magnetic climbing inspection robot, Squirrel, was teleoperated in real time as it climbed and inspected a 5G monopole using Boldyn Networks’ secure, high-performance Private 5G infrastructure.
The demonstration showcased how next-generation robotics, combined with ultra-reliable, low-latency Private 5G connectivity, can fundamentally transform offshore wind inspections. Operators were able to remotely control the robot with precision while receiving high-quality, real-time video feeds, enabling accurate and responsive inspection without the need for personnel to be physically present on offshore structures.
This advancement highlights a new era for offshore wind operations, where inspections can be carried out more safely, efficiently, and cost-effectively from onshore control rooms. By reducing the need for offshore travel and allowing rapid data capture within narrow weather windows, Private 5G and robotic technologies together are set to significantly improve operational resilience and workforce safety.
Boldyn Networks extends its thanks to Acuity Robotics Ltd and the 5G Innovation Centre for their collaboration in delivering this important step toward smarter, more connected offshore energy infrastructure.
